Bun In Need

Sweet Douglas
Injured bunny from shelter makes His new years wish
“Please save my life”

The Rabbit Haven and SaveABunny have come together to save precious Douglas who is scheduled to be euthanized 12-31.  He needs our immediate help!  He needs rescue, neuter and major dental work, then he needs a loving home. Look at him.  He is so lovely. Please help.
Join the match program to help him reach his goal.
Match funds avail now are 250.00$!!!

Douglas is a small gold and white bunny who was abandoned at a shelter just after Christmas. Sadly, this beautiful, loving boy who would rather have pets than food, has a malocclusion.  This put him on the euthanasia list at his shelter right away. He has extra long front incisors.  The good vet at the shelter trimmed him teeth but they will grow out soon.  Dental extraction is his best option.  We already found a great price!!!!

We want to help him.  Not only to rescue him, we plan to have his dental surgery and then he will be available for adoption.  Our special vets have agreed to take care of the teeth and a neuter for only $600.00 (that is a very small price to save his life)!

Right now Little Douglas is just sitting at the shelter- We have asked for an extension but do not know if it will be granted. Kelly from the shelter will call me soon.

  • Foster:  Douglas will need an immediate foster site- (SAB has offered him a space).  But, we must secure the funding for his surgery.
  • Money for surgery:  Look what we have now!!! We have a special generous offer of $250.00 match funds avail. This means that if you donate any amount up to $250.00 it will be matched dollar for dollar.  Then we will be well on our way to achieving our goal of 600.00.  We already have $100 towards the match.   Help Douglas –Send in your match right away.  Good timing anyway- Donations are deductible. http://therabbithaven.org/cash_donations.htm
  • Adoption:  Please contact us if you can offer this loving boy a forever home.  He is an amazing boy.   After begin abandoned and undergoing two surgeries we want him to have such a special loving home.

So for only $600.00 will save the life of Douglas. Do you want to help his New Year’s wish come true? He is the sweetest little boy.  Call Heather at 831 600-7479 11 Am to PM

Douglas will be leaving the shelter just as soon as I can get him out.  We will cover transport, keep working to gather funds for his surgery and then will post along with SaveABunny so that he can find a loving home.

Please help us to save this wonderful bunny in time for new years.
Want to transport?  Can if you can help.

Love,

Auntie Heather

The Latest Rescue

Bhutan and Earle Grey enjoy a snack after having a nail trim and grooming.

Rabbit Haven, despite being full to the gills, or is that ears? with bunnies and having to be closed to new fosters because of that fullness, is involved in another local rescue. You can read more HERE.

Lula's Babies are Loverly

What's that I hear?

It must be the sound of my cuteness

Hop to beat of your own drum, wait this is a rattle.....

I have my eye on you!

You made a good point, but on the other ear I must say......

Excuse me, but who is the cutest bunny here?

I am, I am the cutest

No, I am the cutest, or is it I am Spartacus?
Where did my script go?
I do like your ears, not sure why, but they remind me of somebun

Harken, I hear the sound of the greens bag. Time for noms.
This way to the Casbah.

That big dude with the red nose, ok, not a proper baby bunny.
Me, I am a proper baby bunny.

The Situation

The Santa Cruz shelter system (including Watsonville), went well over maximum capacity two weeks ago. Even with ongoing Rabbit Haven rescue and adoption shows we have not been able to keep up and the shelters have an urgent need for rescue. Sadly, the community continues to dump unwanted animals at an alarming rate at these shelters. We have been working as fast as we can to manage the flow at this shelter, but we need fosters, rescue and adopters to make this work.

This is Meyer, he needs a home of his own
Some of the rabbit over-crowding is due to a steady flow of rabbits that started last May and has not stopped. They just keep coming in pairs or groups and we your help to get caught up. This year we are facing a much heavier animal surrender rate at our shelters.
For rabbits at the shelter, this problem has been made much worse because 6 spaces have been eliminated at the Watsonville facility and 1 in the Santa Cruz site. In addition, 6 additional spaces were lost 4 years ago when they moved to their new shelter facility. Basically, cage space at the shelters is decreasing when numbers of rabbits are increasing. A bad situation for rabbits.

The awesome rabbit advocate, Leslie, has been busy emailing and calling all the rescues near and far and to date, we have been able to get out only 5 rabbits. Tragically two more came in Saturday! Haven has contacted everyone we know in the rescue community as well to find space. We definitely have a huge task at hand. To save lives we need to secure additional rescue, increase adoptions and set up new fosters sites.

"Can you help us RABBITS? love, Harper.
There is so much you can do. We need you. The rabbits need you:
  1. Foster
  2. Adopt
  3. Rescue
  4. Help in a supportive role
  5. Donate
Please see if you have space anywhere to help these little ones. Timmy & Harper need to get out ASAP. They have been at the shelter since April-May. These rabbits are having a hard time in the shelter environment. They are smaller rabbits. Timmy (pictured above) is a tiny dwarf Sable point and Harper is a small white ruby-blue eyed dwarf. Also show are Chip a luscious Rex and Bibbity.
We have only a few days to save their lives. Just fostering for three months will save a life. There are other ways you can help too. You can help transport, pick up supply, put up flyers in the community, assist at the office or even donate. Email me for a complete list of rabbits available at either shelter.
Call us at 831 600-7479 10 AM to 10 PM or email if you want to help director@therabbithaven.org

Urgent: Santa Cruz Area Rescue Needed

The Santa Cruz shelter system (including Watsonville), reached maximum capacity last week.  Even with ongoing Rabbit Haven rescue and our adoption shows we have not been able to keep up – the community continues to dump unwanted animals at an alarming rate. So we have moved into action to get rabbits out to save their lives.

In all fairness, there is just not enough shelter staff to keep up with such a large animal population. Plus now we have only space for 9 and they consistently have 14 and 16 rabbits jammed up at the shelters.   We have lost so much shelter space –and adoption have been very slow.

In addition the shelter is also receiving many dumps of cats and dogs which create a terrible overload on the entire shelter system.   It is a nightmare.

Some of the over rabbit crowding is due to a steady flow of rabbits that started last May and has not stopped. They just keep coming in twos and threes and we never can get caught up. This problem has been made much worse because we have lost 6 spaces at our Watsonville facility and one in Santa Cruz. Add to this that we got squeezed out of 6 spaces 4 years ago when we moved to our new facility and it begins adding up to too many rabbits and not enough space.   A bad situation for rabbits.

The numbers dumped are increasing space is decreasing.

Our awesome shelter advocate, Leslie, got busy sending letter and calling all the rescues near and far and to date  we have been able to get out 5 rabbits- She is transporting out tomorrow – There is still room in her car if anyone wants to help rescue.  Call me 831 600-7479.   Please see if you have one tiny space anywhere to help these little ones.
I’d like to see little Timmy get out –He is a small dwarf show in this message. He is on the “list”.

Even your commitment to take one of these cuties can save their life now.  Once I let the shelter know a rabbit has rescue they are safe, as long as they will be leaving with in a few days of the commitment.

Please help these rabbits - All of them are special in their own way. We are asking for your help, your ideas and your support for the little bunnies in Santa Cruz -

Most rabbits in need are even spayed and neutered.  Haven spayed and neutered 5 of our rabbits that needed it at the shelter so they could be available for adoption or rescue.
So most you might select are already spayed or neutered.

The rabbits are very pretty and there are an assortment colors and sizes. So just ask. I will make it happen.
Thank you to the rescue community that has helped so far.
Getting commitments in the next few days is critical to saving their lives. Transport is offered direct to you. Call me at 831 600-7479 or email if you can help director@therabbithaven.org

Thank you, Auntie Heather

6-8-2012: Kyomi, shelter advocate for San Jose for Rabbit Haven how been working non stop to hold back the flood of rabbits at San Jose. She  finally made it home after a VERY long day  around 8 PM.  The highest risk babies are out-  5 remaining from different litters are older  and next in line for rescue -
Haven took out one group earlier this week  finding rescue with other area rescues and the VERY next day another box of rabbits,  plus adults bunnies were dumped at San Jose Again. Back went Kyomi -Today we rescued a Dutch mom, her litter of 6,  and five additional Babies.  Thank you to Saveabunny for taking three of the orphaned Dutch bunnies.
Sadly we had to leave several babies and adults behind as we ran out of space-and  room in rescue,  but we are posting and talking with all our rescue friends to seek help for them. Huge note of thanks to Kyomi.  Looks like tomorrow transports will continue to place rabbits in rescue or foster care.
Thanks you to all our supporters and to Kyomi for advocacy work at Jose shelter.
Ray will be posting soon with the most adorable photos of the recent rescues - Three are going to Marcy tomorrow since the freeways were impossible to manage today.  Our transport sat in traffic for three hours.
Love, Auntie Heather

Happiness Achieved

News Flash:
The Rabbits View editor just received this important message from a human. Sorry the photo is so small it get all pixelated if it's any bigger.

From left to right: this is Leo and Bartlett. We adopted Bartlett from the Rabbit Haven a little over 2 years ago (along with his brother Skeeter, who recently passed away & is now in Bunny Heaven). Because Bartlett was very lonely and needed a playmate, we adopted Leo (formerly Leon) from the Rabbit Haven about a month ago. Although not completely bonded yet, both are doing well and Bartlett is certainly much livelier and happy having his new little brother in the house! They are both absolutely adorable, loving companions full of personality! Yeah for bunnies!!:-)

Bunny Fest and a Reminder

Thanks to everyone and everybun who attended the Bunny Fest on the 20th at Nordahl Hall in Los Gatos. A good time was had by one and all, attendance surpassed that of last year, and we are already planning for an even better fest next year, if such thing is possible it shall be done.

Everybun put their best foot forward in the Bunny Park.
Lots of girls with their companion rabbits,
 really excellent.

And boys too! so cool!

The Haven family will miss Darrel (above) and Karen
(who is a human, not the rabbit in the picture),
who are moving north, they have been corner stones for  us,
we'd worry about them except they'll have their rabbits
to take care of them.

Taking a break from the fun, workshops on NIC cube housing, tricks, and presentations on massage and health, not to mention all those noisy humans "socializing" and talking about bunnies, requires a little lay down to recoop and look extra cute.
You may have noticed, indeed how could you not, the wonderful photos taken at Bunny Fest. There are more and we understand that a slide show will be forthcoming! Photos were taken by the fab PawPawrazzi and you can visit her webbysite HERE.

REMINDER: The Rabbit Haven Adoption and Education Show is at For Other Living Things this Saturday, June 2nd. Humans from the Haven will there doing nail trims, scent gland cleaning, home health checks, and disseminating very important information about rabbit care. Yeah, just because we want a whole carrot AND can eat one doesn't mean we should have one, hurmph...And there are lots of wonderous rabbits looking for forever homes.  FOLT is located at 1261 South Mary Ave., Sunnyvale CA.

Full Moon Brings Bunny Love

Beautiful Mei Lei found the love of her life in Leo, now Franklin, an affectionate,  fun, lion head bunnyboy.  They spent the afternoon of Saturday together with loving guidance from the family and Raymond who did their matchmaking and bonding. The rest will be history.  Our most precious Mei Lei Selah has found her forever family.

Franklin (left) and Mei Lei Selah

You may recall that Mei Lei Selah had been rescued some time ago from the cruel Aptos breeder who had cut off her ears.   She came directly to Auntie Heather and in a few days surprised us with a darling litter of adorable babies.  She was the best mother,  so attentive and sweet. Even during her early motherhood she needed surgery which was performed by Dr Sarah Hawklyn of Aptos Creekside.  She required surgery on her ears and  her mouth, both the results of injuries  sustained during her life with the breeder.  After her litter was weaned we went ahead with the final surgery needed for her mouth and in a few months there were no longer any signs at all that she was injured.  Well, except that she had no ears.  She is still the most beautiful bunny! Franklin thought so too and Mei Lei has now gone off to her forever happiness.  Thank you to everyone who helped to contribute to her surgical fund!  Three surgeries!!!!  We think she is most definitely worth it.  Look at her now.

All About Bernadette

Hello, my name is Bernadette and I'm an Angora rabbit. I am all about me and my fur. I write in my diary a lot, every night in fact. My foster mom thinks that I'm just chewing on my cardboard tunnel, it's sure easy to pull the wool over her eyes. I think of myself like a heroine in a Jane Austen novel since I have elevated myself out a  really dreadful situation with my wits and good looks. I was once a neglected, lonely, matted rabbit but cleverly, through the manipulation of human pawns I made my way to The Rabbit Haven. I'll be holding court at the adoption show in Santa Cruz at Pet Pals this Saturday February 25th. Only dedicated groomers need apply to be my human companion. I have other talents other than being able to grow fur that can be spun into yarn and knitted into fabulous creations; I am a very vocal bunny and can make all kinds of sounds to let people know what I am thinking. And I am opinionated and sensitive but love a good snuggle, after all I am my own pillow.  I hope someday to have my own TV show, that way more people can see the wonderfulness that is me. You may be thinking I'm delusional but I have already had a big break into show biz, the folks at Disapproving Rabbits saw my photo and just had to post it on their blog!
